Consulting agreements typically involve retaining an independent contractor to provide ad-hoc services to the service recipient. Since the definition of services to be rendered is often general and imprecise, other conventions are typically used to control the risks of "scope creep", billing overages and schedule delays. Pricing under these arrangements is almost universally time and materials, although fixed price, cost-plus and "not-to-exceed" arrangements are not uncommon. The Consulting Agreements Sub-Library also includes recruiting services as a specialized arrangement.
